Philips OLED TV Compatibility

Post by edvanson »

Hi,
I am planning to purchase an asustor nimbustor 2 gen2 as5402tu to replace my old Synology DSM NAS.
Configuration will be:
2 x 4TB hard disk
2 x 1TB SSD
2 x 4GB Memory
The most important thing for use is being able to stream home-made 4K and HD holiday movies in MP4 format via the wired network.
The television I am going to use for this is a Philips 65OLED805, which is a 65 inch OLED TV with Android OS.
I do not see this television in the compatibility matrix.
Does anyone have experience with this combination and a similar use case?
What are things I should take into account?
Is this NAS the right device for this use case?
Which apps should I use on the NAS and TV?

There are so many TVs it's impossible for them all to be tested. I have an AS5402T as part of my Asustor collection and have no plans to change it soon.
I suggest starting with UPnP Media Server V2 then, if that doesn't work for you, you have a choice of Plex, Jellyfin, Roon and a dozen others.

Hi,

Your planned setup with the Nimbustor 2 Gen2 (AS5402T) looks solid for your use case. Streaming home-made 4K and HD MP4 movies over a wired network shouldn’t be a problem — the Intel Celeron CPU in that NAS and the SSD/HDD combo will give you enough performance for smooth playback.

You don’t necessarily need your TV to appear in the Asustor compatibility matrix. Since your Philips 65OLED805 runs Android TV, you have a lot of flexibility with apps. Two common approaches are:

Plex Media Server (on the NAS) + Plex app (on your TV): Great interface, metadata, and transcoding support if needed.

Kodi or VLC on the TV + SMB/NFS share from the NAS: Very straightforward if your files are already in a TV-friendly format (MP4 in your case).

Things to keep in mind:

Make sure your MP4s are encoded in a format your TV supports natively (H.264 or H.265). That way, you avoid transcoding and everything plays smoothly.

Use the wired gigabit LAN connection for best stability with 4K.

You might want to set up your HDDs in RAID 1 for redundancy, and keep the SSDs for cache or as a separate volume depending on your needs.

In short: yes, the AS5402T is a good fit for your scenario, and with Plex or direct playback apps on Android TV, you should be able to enjoy your holiday movies without issues.
