NAS NEWBIE with AS6510T small file transfer speed slow!

Post by NAS Newbie »

Hello all!

I recently setup a new NAS, I am computer literate but networking is pretty foreign to me. I have been searching the forums and sites and have yet to come across an answer to my 'seemingly' super slow transfer rate. While cruising the net I see people complaining of 1mb/s-2mb/s transfer rates for small files but yet I am avging 20-50 kb/s. This seems rather strange and Im really not sure if its simply the amount of small files or something else. I can transfer a large file 850mb at 60mb/s, but when I attempt to transfer a folder containing 33k small files, it slams on the brakes to 22-60kb/s.

When I transfer that same folder from the 8tb external HDD USB to my internal HDD its around 200kb/s still rather slow but still much faster then 22kb/s.

The folder is about 1TB containing 33k files. I have the NAS volume in RAID1 at 9.78TB. It has completed syncing the drives.

Is this just the folder from hell? or should it be faster?

I have heard mention that it would be better to zip the files at zero compression and then unzip on the other side, but still feel like I may be missing something and I would like to figure it out or t least know that I need a new plan to back up this folder and my NAS is running at optimal performace.

Any advise would be great. :D

It depends on your network environment. I guess your PC network should be 1GbE. 60MB/s is not actually good for a big file on LAN. Again, it depends on your network environment and PC performance (and disks on NAS and PC). After you check that the big-file-transfer rate being all right, the small-file-transfer rate should be the fact. You can improve the speed by using SSD on NAS and PC.

I have the ethernet running from the 10GbE port on the NAS to my ASUS RTAC68U with Gigabits BaseT, then to my PC with 1GbE, with the file coming from a external drive on usb 3.0. I'll see about doing some bandwith tests once I find some testing software and then learn how to use it lol.

mm... The results conflict: 116MBps v.s. 485Mbps. I guess the accessing ways of these 2 tools are different...
On the other hands, you might be able to get better transfer speed if you can upgrade your PC NIC to 2.5G or 10G. Otherwise, 1Gb is the limit (near to 116MBps). But I guess it does not help for small file case.
