Migrate linux software raid5 (mdadm) to Asustor AS204-T

Post by killerkelvuk »

Hi, I have a linux server running Ubuntu which has 4x 4TB disks in a software raid 5 using mdadm. I'd like to move those disks and use them in the Asustor NAS however I want to keep the data on the disks, is there a way to move them without having to reinitialise the disks and loose the existing raid set and data?

You can buy other 4 HDD installed to AS-204T. After you initialized NAS, through internet backup (tool can choice Rsyc , file explorer, ftp explorer etc ) your file to NAS.

I would say that in theory, say you get an 8 bay NAS, you buy a new HDD for slot1 and initialize NAS system with this HDD, then try to add your HDDs in slots 4 to 8, maybe there is a way to do it, won't happen automatically though.

I'd say it would take some serious manual editing of stuff, but yes, it could work.

Just my 2c.
