Please add "create link" to file explorer left click/dragndrop

Post by rs277 »

I'd like to create links for certain files/folders instead of creating copies. For example my pictures to different folders of the NAS (TV folder, Piwigo gallery).
It's cumbersome doing it via SSH instead of just left click+drag and dropping it.

You mean link a symlink? What I have found is those work well for everything NOT ADM dependent. I've used symlinks to make season libraries for Plex, and this works very well. The Plex Media Server gets the new folders and makes the library easily. and I can go back and forth within WinSCP (where I had to make the symlink to begin with.) easily. The problem is, the ADM sees the link as a file and wants you to download it. So the symlink doesn't work with it's File Manager.

I'm all for the ADM File Manager supporting the use, creation, editing and deleting symlinks. It could be an invaluable tool to get to portions of the file system that are otherwise hard to get to without it. (Application log files should already be symlinked, IMO. Most of them aren't, they are left in the App Central directory structure meaning you absolutely need WinSCP or a shell client to get to them. This is INSANE in my opinion.

I do not see the symlink available in asustor or syno nas (I have both). is it a concern over infinite cycle?

This option is available if you use WinSCP to make the link. but Asustor's ADM can't use it. Other applications can. I can make a symlink to a Plex library item and create the library and have Plex find the media that was symlinked. It works very well, in fact.

The problem is you have to do this outside of the ADM, and then you can't edit the symlink in the ADM to make changes. If the ADM supported this you could do a lot with it, such as symlink to application log files, etc. Now there's not much functionality with ADM at all.
