Share specific video folders outside network?

Post by rahduke »

Can someone tell me the easiest way to share just a few specific folders for individual users outside my network? Requirements I need are file level access from any device, the ability to stream media (without plex), most importantly share just a few specific folders not the entirety of my NAS...

VPN. Don't expose the NAS directly to the internet. There is really no way to expose "some" shares and not others. Having the remote users connect via VPN to access the shares would be the solution.

Can you elaborate? How would giving VPN access restrict access to certain folders?

I'm not sure if I understand correctly. You should share the folders that you assigned / created. It's not entire NAS natively. If you mean the folders under certain shared folder, you can achieve it by means of creating a symbolic link manually to a newly created shared folder. (However it implies you need to know ssh.)

"outside my network"?, mm... I think you should enable EZ-Router function first. Then you can try to enable "WebDav". (of course, you need to assign correct port forwarding settings). By this way, you can map NAS shared folders to your computers outside your local network.
