If I understood correctly, Tim wants to be able to use his NAS to allow access to some folders from the Internet,
via port forwarding; such as for example web server folders.
Yet at the same time totally block access to other folders from external Internet IP's;
but still allow access to them from internal LAN IP's.
This would enable him to feel confident that his non external access folders are safe from most Internet criminals.
I too would like to be able to configure my NAS in this manner.
I am posting this also in the NAS feature request section.

Re: Configure To Restrict & Allow External & Internal Access
I posted a reply to this in the other forum. Just to summarize, general shared folder access occurs over specific ports (SMB/AFP) and these ports cannot be configured. Opening these ports to the internet is extremely dangerous and should never be done. You should use a service/app that gives you access to the data you require in a more secure fashion. You could use Plex if you wanted for media. If you did require general file access I would recommend setting up OpenVPN perhaps, then you could establish a secure line inside your LAN and be free to access the shares. This wouldn't expose your NAS to the internet at all, only the VPN endpoint would be external facing.
