I'm interested in buying a Asustor AS-302T, but have some doubts regarding the backup of the outlook files.
Right now, I cannot backup these files when outlook is opened (.pst files in use). So I can only backup these files when the program is closed. How does the Asustor NAS deal with these files?
Also the mailserver app is coming up, does anyone know when this feature will be released?
This will influence my decision of buying the device...
You are criticizing Asustor for a limitation of Windows/Office. Outlook keeps hold of these PST files extremely closely. There are some very expensive paid backup software that still struggles with Outlook databases, and make no mistake, a PST file is a type of database. Very few backup programs are able to backup these files while they are Open/Locked. It would require access to a shadowcopy client service to access these possibly. Here's probably the best solution, it doesn't rely on the NAS to backup the PST from Outlook, but Outlook to backup it's data to the NAS. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2030523
It seems to indicate a plugin that was available for older versions of Outlook, and how to enable it for outlook 2010. or http://www.safepstbackup.com/backup-out ... -2010.aspx
Hi Auberon,
Thanks for your reply, of course I'm not criticizing Asustor about some MS database file. But the reply on my question took such a long time, that I was disappointed about the Asustor support.
I hoped that some kind of backup app was available which would backup the .pst file. But I understand that is not the case. Also, there is no indication of the mailserver release.

Anyway, thanks for your reply.

It's better to send a support request to asustor directly. I used to ask for their helps because their responses are very fast.
We usually post problems here to see if there are other forum users encounter the same issues. To find solutions from them... Cheers.
Orion is correct, these are really community forums. The Asustor guys do get around here sometimes, but asking here specifically looking for them to respond is not the best plan. If you need technical help/answers you really are best to go straight to them through the support system. Because the Asustor NAS runs a linux kernel I don't see it really getting a utility that would allow it to pull/read an active PST file. I really do believe you are better looking at a tool on the PC scheduled to back up/push to the NAS.
