New and no clue!!

Post by Gordo »

Hi Everyone,

Just bought myself a AS-602T with just one WD Red 3TB. It's my first NAS!

My aim is to set up an FTP and to host my website using Wordpress. I've had a go and I am completely out of my depth. I've looked at the College, YouTube and other blogs and everyone is talking a different language! If anyone could help or steer me in the right direction, I would be most grateful.

Thanks

Gordo

For ftp, you have to enable ftp service in "service", and check if you have added port 21 in the easy router. And also get yourself a domain name such as gordo.myasustor.com. Then you can connect from outside. Actually it's quite straightforward, though...

Hi Kerry,

Thanks for the reply. I managed to workout how to activate it through services tab but I stumbled with knowing how to connect a domain from outside?? I have a domain name for my website which I want to use to build a new Wordpress or Koken site, I guess I need to use something like Filezilla to connect from outside but I dont know how to do this. :?

Thanks again!

I think you should setup cloud connection first. ADM web page -> Settings -> Easy of Access.
You may try to setup EZ-Router that will automatically detect and setup your router / gateway for port forwarding. If your router does not support this function:
  • You'll need to setup DDNS to get a global internet host name.
  • You'll need to set port forwarding manually on your router / gateway. Visit the management web page of your router and find port forwarding options. You can setup TCP/UDP port 8000 first (ADM web page).
After that, you can find a computer outside to test the global internet host name / cloud ID for port 8000. http://cloud_id:8000/
Hope it helps.

Every one on the internet is talking about FTP because they don't own their web server.
FTP connection is for add/modify/remove files on a remote access server.
Your nas is (normally) on your local network so you don't need FTP to add/modify/remove files.
The server web on the asustor is very simple to use.
Do you want to host your website on your nas or do you really need a FTP connection to configure it from the internet?

Hello Gordo,

If you're NAS is very recent you might be suffering from http://forum.asustor.com/viewtopic.php? ... 4&start=10. On new NASses with the latest firmware there is a bug which will prevent the regular access to user installed applications. If you are comfortable using a tool like putty, then you might want to check the posts by Clinton.Hall.

Feel free to ask if you need more help to check the current permissions of your NAS if you need it.
