Web proxying software - e.g. Glype

Post by Elusivity »

I realise that this should be able to be set up manually once PHP is installed but this might be a decent app to package up and preconfig for use with the myasustore.com DDNS service.

After looking into it and configuring it myself it's easy enough to setup not to have it's own package, I've got another request soon that I think would be suitable for a number of Asustor owners, but I'll post that request up seperately.

For those interested in installing Glype themselves, here's a short guide:

1) Download Glype - http://www.glype.com/download.php

2) Unzip to the Web folder on NAS - e.g. //nas/Web/folder-name-goes-here/

3) Enable https web service on your Asustor via the services app

4) Load Glype from a machine on your LAN - e.g. I used my desktop to browse to the Static IP my Asustor uses on my network - https://192.168.0.249/folder-name-goes-here/

5) On first load you'll be asked to configure GLype, so setup your admin password and configure your settings - I'd recommend enabling all user configurable options, but for more usability you can disable objects and scripts, the images and javascipt on the pages will load, but depending on the proxy software you're trying to get around it may end up getting you discovered and your server address banned.

6) Set up port forwarding for 443 to your Asustor's IP in your router

7) Browse to https://your.ip.address/obscure or if you've setup CloudID https://you-cloudid.myasustor.com/obscure

8) Enjoy your new Web proxy!

Using Glype with your Asustor is particularly useful for getting around overly restrictive netcafe or corporate proxies and ensuring that the sites you're browsing aren't geting recorded.
