Improve user friendliness of backups to exFAT external USB drives

Post by ADMnewbie »

I use an external USB drive for backup, and I have left the drive in its native formatting, exFAT. exFAT is standard for almost all external drives. I have not reformatted it as btrfs or EXT because these file systems are not natively readable by Windows.

I have not enabled ACL on my Asustor.

The backups seem to work, but the logs contain hundreds of "unable to CHOWN" file errors (CHOWN is linux for "change owner"). The jobs always end with an "error" indication, and I cannot tell if all files copied correctly, as the backup logs are truncated because they are so long. Asus tech support tells me this error is because exFAT, as supported by the Asustor, does not support Linux type file ownership. I am not sure this is completely correct, but regardless, the Asustor should have a more user friendly means of backing up to an exFAT drive. That's what most people use!
