Newbie AS5402T PRE-PURCHASE HELP I AM PENDING MY PURCHASE OF AN ASUSTOR AS5402T NAS
:D Replacing an aging NETGEAR Ready NAS RN422
In an effort to put together A self-architected guide I can follow after receiving the ASUSTOR AS5402T
FIRST I am looking for some simple confirmation on basic set up as planned SECOND a couple of questions as well to help me with post installation configurations
CONFIRMATIONS
I intend to use this NAS primarily for file server & data storage, but will be investigating installing JellyFin for in house streaming in the not to distant future
HARDWARE all from ASUSTOR compatibility tables = ASUSTOR AS5402T NAS, TEAM GROUP NVMe 2TB SDD x 2 , 8TB WD Red Pro NAS Internal Hard Drive x 2, Lexar SODIMM DDR4 RAM 8GB x 2
ACCEPTABLE ?

SOFTWARE –Using a custom setup with ADM RAID-1 let ADM detect all installed drives and create a STORAGE POOL with a single RAID 1 VOLUME
ACCEPTABLE ?

QUESTIONS
As I was reviewing the Compatibility Table for M.2 SSD narrowed to as 54 series ! There is a comment as follows = Lockerstor (AS66), Lockerstor Gen2 (AS67), AS54:
Please install a commercially available heatsink with a size below 70x22x4.5 mm and must be installed on the obverse of the SSD.
I am unsure if the AS54 AKA AS5402T is included or not as it does no have parenthesis around it ! Further into the table showing other compatible M.2’s only one has a checkmark next to it in the column labeled...... Need M.2 SSD heatsinks...... and the planned TM8FFD002T0C101’s do not have a checkmark somewhat confused I would prefer to install the M.2’s with a Heat Sink if required but UNSURE OF THE REQUIREMENT CAN ANYONE ADVISE ?
:D Thanks to all who reply !

The drives are all okay but I can't comment on the RAM without knowing the model number. If it's from the compatibility list then it should be okay.

Your proposed RAID configuration will not work as ADM does not support storage pools and a RAID cannot span drive types. Your best option is to have two RAID1s.

The AS54 is definitely in the list but I believe the Nimbustor name has been dropped for the US market; in the UK it appears as Nimbustor Gen2 (AS54). Your proposed M.2 SSD does not have a checkmark against the AS54, as you note, so does not need a heatsink. The gap between the SSDs is very small and it would have been helpful if it was just a couple of mm greater (and there's enough space that this could have been done). Any heatsink really needs to be integrated with the SSD to not exceed the 22mm maximum width specified.

I have an AS5402T as part of my Asustor collection and it's a good choice.
