Asustor Flashstor 6 FS6706T owner

Post by fpmorrison1953 »

I purchased a FS6706T and installed two WD SN 700's (2TB each, M.2 2280 form factor, in slots #1 and #2) but when I connect and power on the device, the green system status light just flashes green for over 12 hours now.

Two other lights are steady blue and the HDD is just dark, but I figure that, since there are no HDD's, only SDD's, that is normal?

I'm a software guy, not a hardware guy, so maybe there is something I'm overlooking.

I have 940Mbs fiber to the router in the basement and a 5Gbps 16-port switch that all the Cat-6e cables I had installed by the builder when the house was built in the second half of 2022.

So LED 1 & 3 are blue, 2 is flashing green and 4 is off?
I doubt your assumption about the HDD light is correct as there would be no point in installing it otherwise. Unfortunately, I no longer have an FS6706T to be able to check this.
My guess is that somehow the SSDs aren't correctly installed. I had SN700s in mine and they're now in my AS5402T so I know they should work. On another forum someone managed to slide an M.2 SSD under the socket rather than into it.

Can you run Asustor's ACC to see if the NAS isvisible/accessible?

Hi,

I own a FS6706T ... my experience is that some compatibility issue can exist with some SSD (I try some one I have from another system)
... up I used Seagate firecuda 530 ... that works as well.

for WD only SN 500 is in the compatibility list ... and require ADM 4.4.3 (another Black SN850X works starting 4.2.6)
Even with HDD it's know that lot of disk run as well even NOT in compatibility list.

Unfortunately I am not in front of my FS67 (600 kms  ) ... but the start with 3 SDD in Raid 5 was quick and without problem.
perhaps can you connect a screen (eventually a keyboard) to see if at boot, UEFI/Bios start and if some error message are displayed.

Philippe.
N.B. the remark from snapshot on checking hardware (connection, fan, order ...) is always a very good start point.

Can you point me to what I can do to watch the device boot? Monitor? Keyboard? Hookup to where on the device. If this is all documented somewhere like a PDF I can download, just point me there and I'll do the rest of the investigation legwork myself.

The NAS has HDMI and USB ports so you can attach a monitor and keyboard as if it was a PC.

2025-03-16 I will get an extra inexpensive monitor and wired (USB-A) keyboard to use to watch the device boot.

Has anyone ever seen anything unusual during the booting of a fresh out of the box FS6706T? If so, what did hooking up a monitor and keyboard reveal?

Here is a link to an online photo album that shows what happens when the device powers on:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/9rEb5YATrSxhqPgSA

From what little I know about hardware, it appears the device understands that there are two Western Digital SN 700's installed but simply boots to a (unix?) shell prompt and stops. No errors. No warnings. It just sits there and does nothing.

Hi,

I can't verify on my FS67 boot sequence (I am in travel)
Shortly boot process :
NAS usually boot on eMMC card (partitioned with EFI, boot, copy of boot partition.
load kernel and initramfs (base root file system) to boot ... then ADM use extra data to generate the working NAS env.
each HDD or SDD is partitioned with, for ex. partition 4 with your data and other for permanent system configuration.

The eMMC as any EFI have an internal shell (the shell you see), but normally switch to boot partition
In your case it's not the case, so certainly a problem with eMMC ... best is to call support (or your seller guarantee) to get an exchange (NAS or eMMC)
... from this shell ... if you know how, you can search a grub efi and exec it, or list boot device, change boot order, etc. but it's not simple.
... if you are a little crazy : https://mricher.fr/post/boot-from-an-efi-shell/ for basic information. but it's 100% at your own risk and choice.

If you have some skills in Linux, boot using a live USB Linux (with Raid tools, btrfs, herdware test, bad block check, etc. and try mounting eMMC to check if all seems correct ... but don't do this if you don't know exactly what you do.

Philippe.
NB if you have any doubts ... don't do anythings.

I'm going to sit tight for a few days and see if anything new develops on the support ticket I opened. If nothing is resolved after a week, I'll send it back to Amazon (the same as I sent the previous one back which did the same thing - power on and sit there dumb as a box of hammers).

Unless a miracle occurs in the next 7 days, I'll wash my hands of anything Asustor and chalk it up to yet another "What Mother Never Told You About How Bad Trying To Get An ASUSTOR NAS Device To Work Is Going To Be" and try something else, like Synology or UGreen and hope they work right out of the box.
