AS-608T Removing Drives from RAID?

Post by Zaragosa »

I have a 608t with 8 4tb drives setup in a RAID5. I want to remove 2 of the 4tb hard drives and replace those with 2 16tb hard drives. My initial thought was to copy the entire contents of the 608t to somewhere else, remove the 2x4tb hds, flatten/reconstruct the 6x4tb as a vol1 then insert the 2x16tb hds and set those up as a vol2, followed by copying everything back to the 608t nas.

It would be much easier to simply remove 2x4tb hds and rebuild with the 6x4tb hds. Is it possible to simply remove 2 of the hds from the raid, and rebuild the raid without lossing the data? I could then simply insert the 2 16s and set them up as a raid0 - vol2.

Thanks in advance for your response

Hi,

As I known, it's not possible to reduce the number of disks in a Raid5 or 6 without doing backup of data, wipe disk and rebuild ...

Also, remember that disk format is specific to the NAS (Asustor or other brand), so you can't keep data and disk is reformatted when inserted.
The Raid for data concern only partition 4 ; others partitions are reserved (Raid 1 O.S., swap, boot ...)

Philippe.
Asustor updated :D to ADM 5.0
FS6706T / AS3302Tv2 / AS5202T
Asustor using last ADM 4.x :D
AS6602T
Asustor E.O.L. at A.D.M. 4.0 :(
AS5002T / AS1002T
Asustor past

As Philippe says, Raids may be grown but not shrunk so your initial thought was the correct one.
