I'm looking at the Asustor Flashstor 6 FS6706T—6 Bay All-SSD NAS Storage with 6x Samsung 990 Pro 1TB drives in a RAID 5 configuration, which should give me ample storage at 5TB.
The Samsung 990 Pro drives have a fairly high TBW for an SSD at a reasonable price, which is the reason I suggested purchasing them for the setup. However, I want to make sure I'm not missing anything important in my decision.
This will be connected to our network for photos (mostly photos from our phone to keep a backup copy of them) and music (from CDs and downloads, etc). I currently use Roon to play music files in my AV room. I have an external USB drive storing all our photos and music. I would like to make the photos and music available to view or listen to via our desktop and laptop computers and mobile phones.
Will this be fairly easy to accomplish without having to be a computer engineer?
Will I be able to simply copy the photos and music from my current external USB drives over to the new NAS?
Any suggestions or recommendations?
Thanks!

The 990 Pro is overkill for the Flashstor as it only has one PCIe3 lane per SSD so a high-end PCIe4 drive would be wasted. For the same price as a 1TB 990 Pro you could buy a 2TB WD Red SN700 which is designed for NAS use. Six of those would give you 6TB in RAID 10 or 8TB in RAID 6 so plenty of room for future expansion and improved fault tolerance. You would need to add heatsinks; either Asustor's AS-HK1 or third-party.
A little IT knowledge is helpful but there are people here who will help if you need advice. There are also a load of useful articles in the Asustor college: https://www.asustor.com/online/College.
Moving your data is reasonably easy. Once the RAID is fully configured, you create shared folders called photos and music and, using Windows Explorer or whatever, just copy your files to them.

Yep... and the 2TB WD has a TBW of 2500 whereas the 1TB 990 Pro is only 600.
Sounds like it's all doable. Thanks for the suggestion and the link to the college... retired and going back to school.

Ah, a fellow adult.
There are five or six of us on here who regularly stick our heads above the parapet to help fellow users so just shout if you get stuck.
My task for today is to pop a couple of 4TB SN700s into my AS6706T.

That is certainly great to know and give me confidence in believing I can work it all out... very much appreciated!
I got everything ordered and it should be in later this week. Hope to get some classes out of the way between now and then. Woo-hoo!
