Looking for some general advice of the best way to set up my Asustor NAS for for best availability around the house. Generally the main thing I use my NAS for is streaming my movie collection using PLEX.
I have just moved to a new house and have pretty much free reign as all the walls need re-plastering and the ceilings are coming out to be re-plastered.
My internet and router are both currently in the front porch.
If you had free reign and could run ethernet cables, HDMI etc through walls how would you do your setup? I have never done this before.
I was thinking of leaving the router in the porch and fixing Ethernet ports in the wall by the router and further ports around the house, living room, conservatory, places where I may want to stream and have the freedom of not having to rely on wifi.
What are your thoughts on this? Thanks in advance.

Re: Home setup for Asustor with free reign
If you want the best WiFi coverage for portable devices (e.g. phones, tablets, and laptops), without having to rely on repeaters or a mesh network, then place the router centrally in the house, not directly on the floor, and not near solid walls, fish tanks or aquariums, microwaves, or anything else which might block signal or cause interference. Also, even expensive modern TVs will still tend to only include a 100Mbps ethernet port, so you'll be relying on WiFi for streaming anything to it.
For sake of ease, and in case you ever need to troubleshoot anything, having your NAS close to your router and connected with a loose ethernet cable (not in the wall) is probably your best bet.
If you're using HDDs rather than SSDs, then you'll want to avoid having the NAS in a bedroom or living room, as while not exceptionally loud, the normal noise of HDDs can be annoying after a while if you're trying to relax.

Thanks for getting back to me. You have also answered another question for me that I've been asking both Asus and the place I bought my NAS from about the noise of the unit. None of them could answer or would even try answer why it was making so much noise, clearly I need to switch to SSD's. I would have thought that would have been something simple they could have answered for me.
