F6706T Hardware Upgrade

Post by hdweiner »

Replace two USB-A 3.2 gen 2 ports with two USB-C ports supporting 40 gbps transfer speeds.

I'm a video content creator working with a Mac Studio using Davinci Resolve 18.6 Studio. All of my source video, still photography, and music resides on the NAS as does the fully rendered product. So, there's lots of A and B roll stuff for each project. And, my TimeMachine backups reside on the NAS as well. The problem is that I'm quickly finding the point where my backup strategy takes hours upon hours to complete. At this rate, my backups won't complete within a 24 hour period.

I've split my backups into two different groups: MWF and TRS, scheduled (of course) on alternating days. I could acquire faster HDDs,like those for gamers, but I'll soon need to transition to M.2 NVME 2280 cards. With USB-A 3.2 the bandwidth limit is killing me. It seems the best I could do is maybe 5 gbps. Real solution strategies are going to require 40 gbps which is well beyond what a HDD(-gamer style) can do.

One fix--which I want to avoid--is limiting the frequency of TimeMachine backups. Hourly backups are great, because in the worst case I only lose (almost) the last hour of week. Once-a-day backups, and I could lose an entire day's worth of work. Hourly backups consume a ton of NAS storage.
