lost web browser connection after volume went full...

Post by spockthewizard »

Hi,

My institute's NAS's volume 2 was 99.8% the last time I checked. (yikes)
It was mounted on several GPU servers and this morning, I lost all internet connection.

The NAS is up and running, according to the LED indicators. So are the ethernet port LEDs.

But I can't ping it. I can't access data through the web browser. I've tried directly connecting it to my laptop via an ethernet cable, and ran the asustor control center search. It wasn't able to detect any NAS. It's like it's brain dead or something

Reboot did not solve anything, but I did receive a google notification email that the shutdown was unexpected and my volume is over 95% full (meaning the internet connection itself is not the problem??)

Rather than direct connection, i've also tried connecting my laptop to the switch the NAS is connected and have not had much luck.

Puzzled why this is happening, and how to fix it.
I need to be able to access the files stored therer, at least!

Any ideas will be of great help! (...or i will be in very big trouble from my boss)

Thanks!

Noticed your other post https://forum.asustor.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=14205. Have you tried the rear reset button? https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1044535/

Thanks so much for the reply.

I have tried the rear reset button, but nothing so far.

1. Pressed the reset button with a paperclip. (The NAS wasn't powered off though)
2. Laptop is connected directly to NAS via ethernet.
3. Set the laptop's ip and subnet mask as mentioned in the manual for my NAS
https://downloadgb.asustor.com/download ... 340221.pdf

4. Entered 169.254.1.10:8000 on laptop browser

... but got connection refused. (ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT)
Also can't detect NAS with control center.

Could this be that the soft reset didn't work? Some suspicious things include
1) wasn't able to hear a beep because the server room is extremely loud
2) the NAS's led indicators didn't flinch (NAS stayed powered on)

Also... as mentioned earlier, I'm kinda convinced this happened because of the full storage.
So this may sound wild, but would the following be safe?

1. Empty out all (or some) HDDs.
2. Replace them with new ones.
3. Try the connecting via web browser.

Would this... corrupt my files?

For the direct connection to the laptop, you'll also have to set the IP of the NAS to static but in this case it wouldn't work because you don't have access to it to begin with.

To reset, keep the rear button pressed for about 5 secs, you'll here a beep and see the front LED flashing while it'll start to reboot.

Which model are we talking about and its setup? Raid? Ext4? Btrfs? IIRC btrfs has issues when out of space but I've not much experience using it.

I don't recommend removing or replacing the disks unless you're doing a clean install including clearing the data content. However you can test power off, remove the disks then boot it up just to check it's not the fault with the NAS itself. You should see the initialization screen if the NAS is healthy. Power off then put back the disks before turning it on again.

If the reset is still not working, if your NAS has a display output, prepare a Live USB or a Ubuntu installer, plug in a USB drive, keyboard and a monitor (kvm in the server room?), boot the NAS into its bios (keep hitting DEL depending on your model), then boot into the USB. Install mdadm from the repo, assemble and mount your arrays. You should be able to see your data and start troubleshooting from there or copy them out. You can refer to my post for recovery, [Tips] ADM system or data volume recovery.
