LOCKERSTOR 4 (AS6604T) Questions

Folks,

I have a couple of aged NAS units that I would like to replace with something more modern and energy efficient.

I like the look of AS6604T but have some questions.

1. Is the ADM OS Linux or is it a closed source, propitiatory OS? Am guessing it's Linux as it seems to be saying it uses EXT4 or BRTS file systems.

2. I can't work out what drives are compatible. When you look on the compatibility page there's a drop down box asking you to choose the series. Is it an AS 6, AS 66? Something different? It is properly ambiguous.

3. Can you wake up the NAS using a the Android app?

4. Can you specify wake up and sleep times at specific times of day?

5. How long does it take to come out of sleep?

6. Is sleep mode simply powering the disks down or is more like a laptop going into hibernation?

7. Just how critical is the compatibility list for 2.5" SATA drives? If you look at the AS series it lists 850 Pro MZ-7KE1T0 as a suitable Samsung drive, yet this is obsolete. Would the 870 Pro series be just fine?

8. If I were to double this up as something to plug into the TV to stream stuff from how do you play stuff of it? Is there a remote control? Can you do it via the android app?

Where the drop down list here selects the unit. On the image it's showing AS 6. Which is the relevant unit to check fro drive compatibility? AS6? AS66? Something else?

I also don't see how this corresponds to the issue about how compatible a new version of a drive is, sorry.

OK, so AS 6 selecting 1TB SSD gives me only three choices:

Kingston 2.5" SATA SSD SKC6001024G 1 TB
Samsung 2.5" SATA SSD 850 Pro MZ-7KE1T0 1 TB
Western Digital 2.5" SATA SSD WDS100T2B0A 1 TB

Does that look right?

Samsung one is obsolete. WD one looks a little tricky to get hold of. Kingston one readily available, but on the pricey side for a 1T SSD. (Although I appreciate it might be more robust than some of th cheaper ones.)

Sorry to flog a dead horse, but the newer Samsung version is the 870 Pro or 870 Evo, are they likely to work?

AS6 is from 2012. You want AS66.

I'm currently using 2x KINGSTON A2000 250Go M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe (SA2000M8/250G) with magnetic disks, on an AS6602T.

Well, if I choose AS66 in the drop down list there are only three drives available still.

Three things:

1. I can see nothing whatsoever about what M.2 drives are suitable.

2. I was under the impression that the M.2s weren't for general storage.

3. Is there any advantage to using M.2s? Could you use two of those and two SSDs for a four disk RAID5 setup? M.2s aren't any lower power than SSDs, maybe faster, but that's irrelevant if the other twoin the array are slower.

I must say that asustor is not clear about that.

Yep, none of these NAS companies make it easy.

Have decided to build a little NAS with a Banana Pi as you can use any HDDs, it'll be lower power.

Harder to set up, can only use two drives/RAID1, but this is just too ambiguous and limiting.

Frankly, I never take any notice of the compatibility list for HDDs or SSDs. It's not physically possible for any NAS manufacturer to test even a small percentage of the combinations available and new drives are constantly being released but the interface is the same so the drives will work.

Expansion RAM is a bit different and I don't know yet what will work in my AS-6706T. The supplied DIMM is buried deeper in the chassis than I'm prepared to dig so I'm not sure yet of its exact specs. The Crucial DIMM I had to hand didn't work; I have Kingston RAM in my current Asustor and Synology NASs so I have some of that arriving on Monday to try.
