NewBye AS-608T, confused "In what format are partitioned HD"

Post by space2014 »

Hi everybody
Edit : ->
This is my 2nd post here
We have since > two days a AS- 608T - D85E
15 hours of testing, to stay a little confused with some basic operations of this device.
I come back to complete my request
depending on the subject here:
http://support.asustor.com/index.php?/K ... ile-system

If I understand it would be the "ext4" I guess at least for a "single Volume"
After installing Ubuntu 13 .1 "quickly" in order to have a "clean" system:
EVERY single Volume creates are not recognized as ext4
Gparted tells me that they are RAID volumes!
AND no partition "ext4" in sight : (

I work only with simple volumes, it was the purpose of my purchase and starting to regret... because these maintain data even in this case is very delicate!
...Since we can not even access the HD partition ext4 (?)
I wanted a more "muscular" from the Qnap 419 server -> Asustor 608T ...
I do not think I made the right choice?

Franz (François- Switzerland)
hm...Google helped me a little (translator) :oops:

I did the studies before. You can use putty to login to nas. And check the output of "mount" and "cat /proc/mdstat". It will show file system types and md partition information. You may try to mount those partitions in the other linux systems. For example:

# mdadm --assemble /dev/md0 /dev/sdc4
# mount /dev/md0 /mnt/tmp

PS: however I didn't actually try those commands. ;)

me too ;)
Thank you for your suggestion;)

but ... a bit laborious.

Here are 2 examples of formatting Single volume
The reading is done on Linux Ubuntu 13.1 + Gparted

1) Qnap 419pII ->
Image

2) Asustor 608T below ("inconnu" mean "unknown", "drapeaux" = Flags) Why "Raid" but should be formated as single :?:
Image

l1) is fully accessible
2) NOT recognized!
`
1) Even under Windows 7 + Ext2Fsd (Utility to read the EXT3 / 4 on windows) It's OK
2) No

"Voilà"
This afternoon I will try to return the 608T to my dealer for ...
(... sorry another... QNAP (6 Bays);)
... I hope they accept.

That should be correct. Asustor adopts md device even if we select single disk volume. For me, it's not a big deal. However, you will need to execute several manual commands if you want to be able to access data in other linux systems. In case of RAID-1 in qnap nas, I think it should be the same if you remove one disk of RAID-1 to other linux system for backup. :)

I think the reason they are all done as raid volumes even when single disk mode is selected is to allow raid expansion which seems logical to me. The data is accessible in other devices it just requires some work, and I think that raid expansion is a more common need than reading drives in other systems (bicbw).

Thank you both for your very pertinent remarks, yes there is always a solution, I grant you, but in my use for reasons of ease of access, maintenance ADM could then offer at least in this case, a such "classical" format.
I know the Qnap, I just ordered a TS-869-Pro as replacement unit.
Maintenance software is still much more elaborate than the ADM, but may be unnecessary in most applications "At Home"

Finally I'm not criticizing Asus_Tor, the ratio price / performance is much more interesting than Qnap. I am sure that in a year, Asustor will have made a beautiful place on the NAS market. I wish for you;) But I could not wait.
Ok
Bye and thank you to all of you.
End;

François ;)
