Greetings All,
Just bought myself a spanking new Drivestor Pro AS3304T v2 NAS to replace my ancient QNAP TS-420 which had 4 HDDs (Total approx. 10TB) in JBOD with EXT4 as the files system.
I wonder if I can move these 4 drives to the new Asustor NAS without needing to initialise entirely as this will wipe out the drives and I don't have enough external drive to back my old drives entirely...
I know Asustor supports EXT4 but is there a way to setup my 4 HDDs without wiping them out?
Grateful for any feedback.
Ross

Re: Help with moving JBOD to new Asustor NAS
Basically, no. Even though the file system may be the same, the partition structure will not be. When ADM sees a disk without its required partition structure it will format it. I can see a way to do it with one extra drive but it's pretty ugly. The other thing to consider is, if the drives are as ancient as your TS-420, is it really worth re-using them? A final thought: if your data have any value then you should have enough external drives to back everything up, especially if you're using JBOD which has zero resilience.

Re: Help with moving JBOD to new Asustor NAS
Thank you very much Snapshot for your advice.
It dawned on me after writing my earlier post that this was not likely to be possible but was not clear of the reasons which you have explained clearly.
Actually my drives are far more recent than my old TS-420 so not worried there and the data on them is for convenience rather than being critical so appreciate alerting me to this.
For now I am backing all drives data on a USB 14TB external drive which naturally will take a while and then get a fresh initialisation on the AS3304T from scratch with ADM.
Many thanks

Snapshot is right
both don't use the same OS.
you have to restart from scratch
