GOOD Firewall

Post by buhuhu »

Hi,

If you want a good firewall maybe add CSF fireall http://configserver.com/cp/csf.html or Fail2ban http://www.fail2ban.org/

I think you will find fail2ban is not a firewall, I run it as a 'plugin/script' on my iptables firewall, it is probably close to asustors network defender in that it only bans people after multiple failed login attempts.

In a linux environment iptables is a pretty good firewall but can be complex to setup and manage, I believe CSF is a set of scripts to manage and manipulate iptables rather than a firewall in its own right (rest of firewall rant removed :) ).

no idea, I have never investigated as it is adequate for my needs, my 'firewall' sits between my lan and the internet and that is the one that I devote my time and effort to. It is based on iptables and scripts, I am guessing the one on the NAS is based on iptables too.

Maybe, in the feature, put CSF in asustor. At this time it is the best FREE solution for linux (iptables) and it is very easy to configure from web with webmin module.

P.S. Cpanel it is leader on the market for webhosting panel and they use CSF.

If they do install it I hope it is as an app, as then I can choose not to install it and not have (in my case at least) un needed software and complexity on my nas.

CSF is designed for a control panel driven server...

NO,...csf is firewall and work on cpanel, directadmin etc or STANDALONE linux kernel with IPTABLES support.

P.S. Please if you know other good FREE solution for firewal please let me know.

what do you need a firewall to do that isn't covered by the current solution and I will have a dig for something to suit your needs, ie do you open all ports to the nas and need them all firewalled effectively by nas OS? or do you need a firewall to sit on your router/gateway (best place) that will firewall your lan from the internet?

at this moment ASUSTOR don't have a firewall.

How can close ALL ports an leave open witch port you want from INTERNET to ASUSTOR and leave open ALL ports from ASUSTOR to INTERNET ?

How can make apache http port open to all and samba to specify IP ?

....and the list can continued.....

"firewall" from asustor is very limited
