I want to buy a new NAS.
Can my old DLINK 4 bay DNS-345 transfer to the Asustor AS5304T? Apparently if they are compatible I can just remove the 4 drives from my old NAS and place into the new and the transfer software will do the rest. Is that correct?

Unfortunately, no, this will not work. The Asustor NAS will initialise any drives that were not initialised in another Asustor NAS. This will be true for all makes of NAS.

In that case, I guess I would have to back-up all the stored data. Reformat the 4 hard drives . Install them in the new NAS and then migrate the backed-up data to the new NAS?

Yes, that's the only option, but there's no need to reformat the drives as the new NAS will do that for you. Depending on how much data you have, a WD Elements of the appropriate size would work well and it's always a good idea to have your NAS backed up anyway.

Thank-you so much for your advice.
Next thing is to buy the new NAS! I hope all goes well. I have music on it that will be very difficult to replace. I'll take your advice and always back-up. The AS5304T looks a good choice for my needs.

Yes, although it's one of the oldest in the current line-up, it's still a good unit and should serve you well. I bought mine almost five years ago and have only just replaced it.
