Timed Sleep and Wake on Access
It would be nice to have a timed sleep function and the ability to wake the NAS on file access. I have a Shuttle Omninas KD20 that has this functionality. It goes to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity and will "wake up" when you access the windows share.

In the Settings>Hardware there are a Disk Hibernation and a Power Scheduling. It doesn't work like you want?

Re: Timed Sleep and Wake on Access
No, the hibernation and scheduling doesn't work for me. The drive hibernation is OK but I want the whole system to sleep (should be much more energy efficient in this state).
From my testing, power scheduling can put the system to sleep but it won't "wake" if you access the NAS. It looks like the only way to "wake" it is WOL. That doesn't work for me because I have scheduled Backup/Sync jobs that run unattended. And, I never know when I might need to get to my files.
I would think that if an inexpensive NAS like the Shuttle KD20 can perform this "sleep/wake on access" function, a sophisticated device like the Asustor should be able to do it too.
*** These aren't really a complaints, just concerns. I REALLY like the my AS-302T and would recommend it to others. ***
The only issues I've found are the following so far:
- "sleep/wake on access" limitation
- jumbo frames are limited to 4K (although you can chose bigger, they don't work)
- The NAS must be rebooted if you change the workgroup name (It doesn't say this anywhere or suggest a reboot in ADM after the a change.)

The jumbo frame works quite well for me up to 9k. You have to make sure that the other end of the device or other devices should support different jumbo frames. And isn't it the same that the system will reboot even in windows 7 or 8 so the services can be more "cleanly" start again ? Maybe there are some other justification I don't know ?

Re: Timed Sleep and Wake on Access
I entirely agree with mh01 that there should be better definition of when the system should wake. My synology wakes when file access is requested, that is how I expected this to work. I can't see the difference between 'off' and 'sleep' with this NAS, same power consumption, both will only wake by pressing the button or a WOL request. I would expect 'sleep' to be a sort of lighter state, where it can be roused more easily!
Also, as mh01 mentioned, other NAS will automatically go to sleep (yes i know it disc idles) after a certain amount of time, why is there no option for that here? I want a system that sits in a (very) low power state, wakes when I need to access files, then goes back to sleep afterwards. This seems hard to achieve! I think this one will be going back and I'll end up building my own.

Re: Timed Sleep and Wake on Access
I do not see my Synology DS1511+ has the sleep function as Asustor. What Synology has is hard disk (internal or external) standby, not the whole system going to sleep (S3 mode). It is only hard drive going into hibernation but the nas system is still on. Asustor also has the hard drive standby mode for internal and external (setting/energy saver) but the extra S3 sleep mode which truly cut down power consumption to below 1w. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_C ... _Interface

Re: Timed Sleep and Wake on Access
I think it's a processor related function, these Atoms support the S3 sleep state so are able to enter it. Being able to enter it, why not take full advantage by allowing the option to sleep after inactivity. If you look around this forum this issue has come up a few times, seems like a no-brainer to me.
Specifically on synology, my 213+ and 413 had exactly this option (processor supposedly supported) which is why i bought them. However...it never worked perfectly, crashes, wouldn't wake up to perform scheduled tasks etc. Which is why theyre going back.

I do love this features, would you please show us how to set up this features on your KD20?mh01 wrote:It would be nice to have a timed sleep function and the ability to wake the NAS on file access. Re: Timed Sleep and Wake on Access
Nice to know that. However, how come ds1511+ with atom cpu doesn't support sleep function...but at least Asustor sleep function is working perfectly with schedule and wol.
