Need a way to initialize NAS op sys from Linux

Post by asuster »

I find it very odd indeed that Asustor doesn't provide a way to install ADM from a Linux desktop machine, yet ADM is Linux. I love Asus hardware but there seems to be a bias against Linux from the lack of support for it, for example Asus computers only push Micro$oft op sys. Asustor is a division of Asus.

Android is a derivative of Linux, so why not port AIMaster to Linux, say in an appImage to support Linux users?

I had to jump thru cumbersome hoops to use AIMaster on my smartphone to install ADM on my new AS5404T NAS. This should not be necessary for a Linux user that refuses to support Apple or Microsoft.

Turn on NAS, get NAS local IP from your router or arp/nmap, default port is 8000, access in browser, initialise.

What issues did you have with AiMaster on your phone?

Hey thanks for the reply.

That sounds easy enough, strange that process is left out of the startup / initialize guides.

I got it done with a cell phone, but I don't like the small display and keyboard where you have to switch between alpha & punctuation keysets. I just don't like using smart phones for such work. Takes me longer, more points of frustration along the way. I don't use WiFi at home so had to get phone connected to nas with an ethernet dongle on the phone.

I initialized the nas using a 512GB NVMe to scope it out and play around until the 4 NVMe sticks I ordered for it arrived. I set a static route to the nas in my router based on MAC address, so finding the nas was easy after I replaced the 512GB NVMe with the 4 I was waiting on.

As you say, initial setup using a browser is straightforward.

Asustor really needs to update their documentation and quickstart guides (especially the tiny little paper insert that is shipped with the nas) to reflect this method.

How did you discover it anyway? I failed to find this process anywhere and I spent considerable time looking for it.

I've set up devices on my LAN before, it's generally just a case of 'access webUI in browser, do the thing'. Given you're largely going to be interacting with the NAS through your browser, it makes sense you can initialise it that way as well.

As far as I'm aware, ACC just finds the NAS IP and opens it in browser anyway.

Jeff Geerling seemingly had the same idea - https://www.jeffgeerling.com/blog/2022/ ... nas-set-it
(I only found it by googling 'Asustor nmap', so unless you already knew, you weren't finding it)

I overlooked the web initialize method in this PDF. Section 4 (Software Installation Guide) states there are 3 installation methods. I read that as Windows, Mac and smart phone. However, just above the "Mobile Device" heading is "Web Installation" that provides the answer provided above.
