A Kiwi has landed with an AS-608T

Post by konkonkaos »

Hi,

Am I the first Kiwi on this forum? I see I have a Down-under cousin (Aussie).

Not that anyone cares... but I've just bought the AS-608T online along with the 2G RAM upgrade, I think it's the best value 8 bay out of QNAP and Syn'. Now I have to sit and wait for it to turn up.

I'm a total XBMC fanboy having used it on an XBOX 1 back in 2005. I'm not planning to run XBMC on the AS-608T, but it's good to know the team are working on it - just in case. I have a Zotac Zbox as the media player, although there are some much cheaper options out there now. I got an IPTV box from eBay that does 1080P and have XBMC Frodo for US$80. too cheap.

For a server I have used, NASlite, but got sick of the upgrades $$$. Then FreeNAS was awesome for 5 years, then they upgraded and I could never get all my drives to mount. So I tired NAS4Free, much better but again it got confused when adding or removing drives. A few of my friends have also been down the same road and now all have QNAP, but I think (hope) Asustor will end up being the better choice. I just want stuff to go, I don't want a nightmare every time I change a drive.

The plan is 4 x WD Red in raid for TV/Movies and the rest just WD green as standard drives, mirrored to my PC for the critical stuff.

Cheers All

Welcome KonkonKaos,
for two years I observed the NAS market and was determined to purchase a QNAP one day. This "one day" arrived: it was 06/16/2013 when I ordered my NAS - and on this very day... changed my mind and ordered an Asustor! There is only one thing that bothers me a little - the fan noise! But then hey! My 1HE rack runs in the cellar and the noise only confirms that Asustor uses high performance fans...
As your machine is a bigger one rest assured: You will not have this problem ;)

I had a closer look on Plex last weekend and recommend to give it a try - very appealing, straight forward and intuitive. In case you didn't use XBMC customization extensively I think Plex might be a good alternative (but does not offer as many settings and tweaks).

I've been to your beautiful country twice (2004 & 2006) and want to visit it at least one more time...

All the best and a good start with your Asustor

Kia Ora, Damn, not the first, well hopefully I'm the first on this side of the ditch.

We bag Aussie a lot but far better opportunities there to earn good money than here. Plus our house prices are insane.

Cheers

Thanks, I'll update my details.

I have a separate media PC and am very familiar with XBMC so will stick there for now, but I will investigate plex non the less.

Glad you liked NZ, I was born in the UK but grew up here, I've traveled a fair but and still love it here. Just wish we had higher pay as importing things here is expensive.
