The 5315 and 2700 processors should offer similar support for video decoding/transcoding. At this point it is difficult for us to compare the two because they are both provided by Intel, so we don’t have the exact numbers for them right now. But I do think that a more powerful CPU will have an influence of decoding/transcoding performance.

If you wanted to stream videos from your AS-602 onto your PS3 or iPad, you can use our UPnP Media Server to stream your videos to those devices via DLNA. However, as UPnP Media Server does not provide decoding/transcoding you still wouldn’t be able to play mkv files on the PS3. For your iPad you would just need to download an appropriate app that can play mkv files and you’re ready to go.

I would also like to recommend that you try Boxee, since you mentioned that you would like to connect your NAS to your TV via HDMI. Boxee provides excellent decoding/transcoding for a huge range of video files and you would definitely be able to play your mkv files. You can download Boxee from App Central. Video formats supported by Boxee include:

H.264 AVC (TS/AVI/MKV/MOV/M2TS/MP4)
VC-1 (TS/AVI/MKV/WMV)
MPEG-1 (DAT/MPG/MPEG)
MPEG-2 (MPG/MPEG/VOB/TS/TP/ISO/IFO)

DivX 3/4/5/6 (AVI/MKV)
Xvid (AVI/MKV)
WMV9 (WMV/ASF/DVR-MS)

When will you reveal the price and availability of the AS-304T in the EU?

I hope it will be soon as I really need to buy a home NAS asap and the 604 is a bit pricey.

mm... the AS-304T looks exactly like AS-604T. Very sturdy feeling... If the price can be affordable, with Intel Atom duo core CPU (???Ghz), it should be the best value for money, compared withe the slow slow Marvell CPU...
