Rsync Module when creating a share

Post by bruceleeon »

Typcially, in other NAS, when you create a share the Rsync module is created at the same time. Either make this automatic or a checkbox that is checked by default to yes when creating a share. It is cumbersome to create a share, then have to create an rsync module after the fact.

well i personally think that the asustor design is way better than the others (e.g. qnap). i have been using qnap nas for many years, in fact, i think they shouldn't use the shared folder as the rsync module "automatically". a rysnc module shouldn't be a shared folder, and this is very basic!

the reason why i think that the asustor design is the correct one simply because you can store all backups within one shared folder, and separate different backups in different subfolders by creating different modules, meanwhile, rysnc server should have its own access control, and that's the spirit of rsync. but qnap can only allow one user account which looks kinda ridiculous. i mean if it's for personal or home use, it's fine. but from a business point of view, this is definitely wrong. no flexibility and security.

i had been working in the IT industry for may years, here are my opinions why asustor is better than qnap:

1. security: qnap uses one single account for rysnc server, that means, as long as you have the account, you can access "all" shared folders (in this case, they are rsync modules), and this is definitely WRONG!
2. flexibility: i am used to keep all backups (from different locations) in the same shared folder. with asustor nas, i can simply create one shared folder called "Backup" and then create several subfolders as 3 different modules under this share (e.g. bk1, bk2 and bk3). each module can have its own access control, therefore, i don't need to worry about the security problem as each account can only access those modules that he is granted to access.

i like asustor because i found they did spend time on developing this product, even with these small parts...

Agreed, I do like the ability to have different users associated with different modules. However, my feature request is not comparing it to QNAP, Thecus, Synology, or other. All I am asking for is the ability to either have the RSYNC module created automatically (by checking a box) or the ability to not have it created (not checking a box) when building a share. This maintains the flexibility enterprise administrators like and the ease of use that SOHO / Small business admins will like. It is the best of both worlds.
