Requesting support for zfs

Post by dullbob »

Port zfs to ADM and replace the current RAID system. ZFS has a lot of documented advantages and it can use cheap hardware to increase performance.

I want this for better RAID options and easier RAID changes. But I woudn't be surprised if some hardware changes resulted in significant performance increases over ASUSTOR competitors.

It would be really great to be able to run ZFS on the Asustor NASes, but there are risks involved in running ZFS if the system does not have ECC RAM (none of the Asustor NASes have ECC RAM).

See this thread for more details on the matter.

Full disclosure: I have neither run ZFS on any system nor am I well researched on the matter, I just know that this is a great concern within the community. How real the threat is debatable, for sure.
Hi, I'm new here. Looking to be active in the community and help with development :).

I read your thread but also looked at the consensus on the FreeBSD forums. A quick look there (they really like ZFS over EXT files systems) has them saying that ECC is better than non-ECC especially for long uptime systems. But they feel that ZFS has the advantage over the more traditional file system + RAID system even with non-ECC memory. https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/45853/ has the discussion I reference.

Personally, I'd be good with ADM gaining ZFS and ASUSTOR making ECC memory an option. To properly support ZFS at the high end, ASUSTOR should probably make other hardware options available for the various caches. Its one good way to differentiate the 200/400/600 series of hardware.

I'd still like to have ZFS support built into ADM even though my particular unit might not be able to use it. At some point, I'll need to buy more hardware. If I can't bring myself to use ZFS now, I really want to have it on my next purchase.
