It has always been a debate why spending money on NAS instead of EEEPC or obsolete PC....I have Synology and now Asustor. The reason for me using NAS is that NAS saves me a lot of time in making a FreeNAS or having a Window PC as a ftp server, backup server etc..NAS is fine tuned to fit most users who do not the complicated skill and that is the reason why NAS is getting popular these years. And many apps do fit my needs for multimedia, uPnP, media player etc. which I just do not have time to try and error. Those of you having the skill should just make your own NAS with barebone PC instead of buying the off the shelf NAS...

You can easily get what you want with HP Microserver, like N54L, or gen8. You can install any OS you want on a Micro Server. Why did you buy a NAS?
