FFMPeg

FFMPEG is now in the beta apps. (Might have been there for a while, not sure.) After installing it, though, I noticed that ffplay and ffprobe aren't included as part of this install.

Is there a reason these were excluded from the installation?

This is part of the package, so should have been a part of the install. Can we get them included? (Package is maintained by Asustor.)

This whole package is important to anyone doing automation conversions of movies/TV shows on their NASs. (converting MKV's to MP4's, etc.)

Thanks for the kind feedback! We have included ffmpeg mainly for photo gallery video thunmnailing and not for other purpose. For the movie/TV shows conversion, you can use the Looksgood for the media conversion purpose!

Well, no, I don't... It doesn't fit my client usage or user base, where as Plex does. When I saw FFMpeg I thought "here was the answer to my automation scripting for converting MKV's to MP4's" to ensure streaming on my NAS. So, I install the app from App Store to find out that the installation is only a small portion of the complete package.

I have as many as 5 people at a time attached to my Plex server all streaming. If I went to LooksGood, no one else would be able to if one client is attached. The important thing to make all of this streaming work is to have the media in a streaming container and codec. As it is now, I have to move every file from my NAS, convert it on my laptop via HandBrake and then move the files back again. VERY time intensive and a lot of hands on involved for every file.

Again, another half thought out implementation of an app that could really be useful if someone had the whole package. Can we please get the entire package of FFMPEG (including FFProbe and FFPLAY) or should I just try side-loading it, as I had to for a working installation of Perl?

Hi MikeG, I am currently using Looksgood to automatically convert mkv to mp4 (480p) for whatever I put in that folder. And then I share with other Plex users with this same folder. I got no problem this way. Is ffmpeg even better?

Scripts can be written to look in a folder, and when a movie/show shows up there, another script is called to do the conversion automatically, to do a conversion with ffmpeg. Following the conversion, another script is called to say, rename and move, etc.

I honestly haven't tried installing LooksGood to try any type of conversion process there. Mainly because I'm sitting at 60-80% memory usage already and having another video sharing app running seems over-kill when I have a fully working Plex install going and sharing out over 1300 movies and 179 TV shows with over 12K episodes.

Maybe I'm limiting myself...
