Option for different OS install

Post by liefde »

I'd have preferred OpenMediaVault or any debian-based plain linux system over this script-kiddy horror (full of workarounds, patches and permission hell) called ADM. Seriously, it's too insecure to open access up for the world (trust me, I know). Most 3rd party apps can't handle TLS1 or even SSLv2 and I'd prefer to run them the way they normally would on a debian minimal server system.

You've decided to use some wacky OLD version of openssl, so ssh logon is a PITA. Nothing can be automated, every actually useable change to the system is lost at reboot.
Oh and LastPass doesn't remember ADM admin login-data, which is a PITA as well. Never seen that with *anything* else, by the way.

I'd be seriously happy to be able to use this hardware with eeh.. ANYTHING other than ADM, to be perfectly honest. This OS was a mess by design, as far as I can see. The sooner you all realize that it is, the better.

 +1

The hardware has great potential but the OS / software / security issues....

+100

I try 3 month ago but without success.

when you buy a NAS (NAS-604T as example) you pay ~500 euro. This price is much smaller like qnap with the same specs because 80% you pay for SOFTWARE.

I'm sure when asustor have software comparable with qnap the price go up !

But even qnap's OS blows compared to OMV or debian minimal. I don't see why they even create such software for these hardware appareils. Would be great if they just sold the hardware.

Why? You can build a mini ITX box much cheaper if you just want to install your own OS. I priced a mini ITX machine with 8 gb RAM, A Celeron 1037U (faster than the Atom in the Asustor 6-series), a case that will hold 5 3.5 drives but the MB supports only 4. Everything but the HD's for $309 or €225. I'm sure I can do better if I just take some more time shopping. NAS's by Asustor et.al. are for those guys that want a turn-key solution with a nice interface so that they don't have to dig into the Linux workings unless they want to.

Sounds to me like you are trying to use it for something other than what it was intended for, and are simultaneously trying to advertise your little research project (which may also get you into some legal trouble, since what you did likely violates many laws in many countries).

It's not my research project. I have access to it, but many others have..

I'll just but in also here from an IT perspective. If you think of it, what did you guys buy, you bought yourself a NAS.
Network-attached storage (NAS) is file-level computer data storage connected to a computer network providing data access to a heterogeneous group of clients. NAS not only operates as a file server, but is specialized for this task either by its hardware, software, or configuration of those elements. NAS is often manufactured as a computer appliance – a specialized computer built from the ground up for storing and serving files – rather than simply a general purpose computer being used for the role.
So basically everyone who complains that their NAS can't do bittorrent, can't do VPN, HDMI output, Wordpress, or whatever else, a NAS was NEVER designed for that. A NAS was designed to sit on your network and provide you with your files that is it.

Technically we should find a new name for these devices since we clearly don't use them as they where intended :)

Just my 2 cents.

Still, it would be nice if they would have configured the NAS properly. Right now the security (like permissions / services running as root/admin user) is a mess.

Exactly my point. They proudly present it with a zillion apps themselves, I did not ask them to. So since they do, they obligate themselves to make it secure enough for NAS-owners to be running it connected with a WAN, everybody I know uses it on their internet-router. Some make it a DMZ for ease of use. And then all hell breaks loose. You just have to be a little experienced with php, mysql, cgi/pl, and all the non-TLS traffic to/from the NAS to see the immense security risks involved.

I guess some companies just rather do handouts to the pro burglary/snooping agencies and the likes by handing them easy access to their 'surveillance' apps on NAS-es like these. Finally you can actually manipulate the security-cam video like in the movies, so people's homes can be accessed by NSA/FBI without them ever noticing a thing. ;-)
