LACP - Dot1Q Trunk (VLAN Tagging)

The 5104 while interesting is beginning to make me wish I never purchased it three days ago..

Simply put, you allow us to configure an LACP Dot1Q interface but we can't tag more than one VLAN Interface within the single LAG interface that has been set-up.. This is a VERY common thing on other devices I've worked with and I need this functionality.

Why?

- Access VLAN 200 is where all the clients are and they need 1500 byte MTU
- Storage VLAN 2022 is where the storage network sits, it's non-routable and has a 9000 byte MTU..

Apparently one can't have the above logical interfaces assigned to an LACP connection for reasons that escape me.. This is not cool..

Also it appears that if I try to split the interfaces, 1Gb Ethernet in one VLAN and the second in the other VLAN, access, meaning routing of traffic becomes very very broken!

So what does it take to get the above to work? I've already contacted support yesterday and have not heard back from them.. not cool

To the OP, this might be a limitation of the ADM software front end, with WinSCP you might be able to edit the appropriate config files to achieve the desired effect. As the ADM is basically an Ubuntu shell, start your research there. If it's not commonly available, it might be something you can add in via a PuTTY/terminal app install. Remember also, your router/switch needs to support 802.1q and provide the required configuration as well. This might require a lot more config on the router side even after everything might LOOK good on the NAS side of things. Before going much further with this, verify that the router/switch can actually be operated in an 802.1q configuration. Many can't, and those that can, can be tricky to configure.

Also, the ADM is written to the least common denominator. The average home user with zero Linux experience. What you are asking for is a VERY advanced networking feature. Not the average home user knowledge base by any means... Yes, the home user might have more NAS than he needs, but, the extra Ethernet port is a fail-safe if the first one fails for them. (Swap the cord out, when the lights go out, type of thing.)

No worries.. I did google this and there is apparently a way to make this work without the front end and I could build a boot script to have it repair itself, etc... But it's apparently not easy and would get nuked when ADM upgrades.. So that's why I ask about the capabilities to do so.. Hell if Syncology or QNAP can do it with their front end why can ASUSTOR?

The model of I have is a 5104T which advertises itself as a pro type system up to small businesses.. Since I work in this type of realm I expect NAS devices to support this function.. The lenovo IOMEGA one does and it's at least 2 years older than the 5104T.

So at the end of the day, I 'd like this functionality so I can walk my customers through it..

Its actually rather straight forward if you work in network and data center space that I do..

5104T NA --- 2X 1Gb Ethernet -- LACP -- Cisco 3650 switch - two VLAN's 20 & 2022
