The new guy, Raid 1

Post by gafireman »

Hello all. I've been lurking around the forums for some time, and finally decided to get me a AS 302T with 2 WD Red 2TB drives.
I will be using my NAS for; lots of pictures, movies, TV shows, openvpn, sharing files (small business office) streaming music, mail server, and to test wordpress templates before I upload them to my business site family site.

My NAS should be here on Tuesday 1/20/15 with 1 wd drive, amazon would not let me buy 2 of them, so I got the other from Tiger Direct.

My question is can I install that first drive and setup the NAS, and when the other drive comes on friday, pop that other one in and configure it for raid 1, or do i need to do the raid 1 setup all at once.

Thanks Orion. Can I ask; what happens if say your media folder is on disk 1 volume 1 and it gets full? I imagine the ASUSTOR wont automatically start writing to another disk?

Thanks for the replies, I have the nas setup, and running raid 1. After I made that post I thought of it, and would actually prefer JBOD but I saw no option for that. After looking into the raid topic I think that raid1 one is kind of a waist, even though the drives are mirrored, with the identical info, it is still not considered as back up, at least with JBOD I can get the maximum spce of 2 TB drives =4 TB vs raid one where 2 TB drive =2TB (1.7).

Thanks for the input.
