Media Streaming

Post by NeoTek »

Hi,

a must-have for me that a NAS should can is to stream MKV files to my TV or Tablet.
Will the ASUSTOR NAS solutions provide support for streaming mediafiles like MKV?
If not, is it possible to install other Media Servers like Twonky Media on the NAS?

Thank you!

Hi there,

Our UPnP Media Server app supports MKV and other media formats. However, please note that your DLNA DMP (Digital Media Player) has to support playing these formats.

For example, PS3 only supports playing some specific file formats:
http://manuals.playstation.net/document ... types.html
and you can see MKV is not supported, therefore, you will only be able to browse the MKV files on PS3, but won't be able to play it on PS3.

As to your android tablet, it's possible to play files like MKV with ASUSTOR NAS.

And yes, you could install other UPnP media servers through App Central.

Thanks,

@NeoTek:

It's easy to watch mkv files on my iPad. I just have to install Plex Server on the Asustor and the Plex Client App on the iPad. I'm not sure if there's a Plex Client App for your Galaxy Tab but it should be. The Plex client app for tablets/phones is not for free, but well worth the little money! There are many other DLNA Client Apps for Smartphones and Tablets but Plex has by far the best performance.

Regarding your Samsung TV (I'm using exactly the same TV) there's a Plex client app for free! Go to the Apps an install it on your TV. Second turn on the Plex Media Server on your Asustor. Now you'll see the Asustor server in the Plex App on your TV. That's it and you can stream all your mkv's. Please note, that the black levels of the Plex app on the Samsung TV are really bad with the newest firmware. At the moment there is only one solution to downgrade the firmware to 1015.

If you don't wanna use Plex, just turn on the UpNP Media Server. You're TV will find the files automatically. It also plays mkv's and many other formats.

Cheers!
