Simple DAS box for MyArchive disks

Post by Derek »

For me MyArchive is very important functionality, and one of the main selling points. While other manufacturers offer similar solutions, currently Asustor offer is the most polished and elegant.

I believe that this leadership position could be further solidified by offering an additional box, a DAS (direct-attached storage), which Asustor could quickly design by simplifying one of the existing 2 or 4 bay NASes and adding USB and eSata interfaces (not expensive!). Such DAS would tremendously expand flexibility of MyArchive by allowing use of library of disks with archives independently of network, improve portability, and even allow creation of emergency booting backup disks. Asustor already has all required hardware, such DAS could be easilly and quickly designed, and introduced at a very attractive price.

Hi,

this is a very old post, but i think it would be a great feature. We have a USB 3.2 Gen2 ports – 10Gbps speed which could be used as Direct Attached Storage. Specially for home users, we could take advantage of the NMVe for video editing via high speed link, while the rest of the network uses a 1gb or 2.5 gb ethernet link and slower disks.. (cheaper solution and higher speed!)

Does anybody know if it is doable with the existing hardware of a lockerstor 4 gen 2? Is it a matter of software and drivers? or it needs something else..

Thanks!

It should be easily doable with the existing AS6004U and AS5004U expansion boxes but there has to be a large enough market to make it worthwhile. QNAP obviously thinks it's there as its TR-004 expansion box can act as a DAS.

Thinking about it, the Asustor boxes may work as DAS if you have a controller that can handle port splitting. I tried my AS6004U on my PC and all I could see was the first HDD so the standard Intel controller wasn't good enough.

I wouldn't think a regular home user would buy an expansion just to use it as a DAS. I would rather connect directly to my NAS to use it as DAS at the same time. There is a 10GB USB port where data flows in and out. That's why I thought it could provide access to the disks from a PC.
