Yeah you are right..
It's a bit the same with the Asustor staff guys no longer posting here or at least maybe only in pre-sales. the latest announcement is from February.

Can understand this to some extend being a community forum.
But then atleast let trusted members have some kind of moderation rights on this forum so they can keep it clean.

Social media might be hot, and i do get most info from the Facebook page but a forum has still some meaning/usefullness to it. But it looks like it's getting neglected a bit to much lately.

So please @James.S@AST; or others @AST please give atleast some longtime members here some extra rights to keep this forum clean..

Thank you

indeed, I guess there are a few regular attenders/posters who would be willing to do some basic moderation

Yeah... I was deleting 100 posts at a time on CouchPotato forums... Added a spam filter and that problem is (mostly) gone but get a few people saying their IP is blocked...

I am in contact with the team at Asustor. I have made a few suggestions and just waiting to see what they come back with... More to come.

Yep ditto, stop them signing up and give someone power to remove them. Heck I'd hit this once a week and clean it myself if I could.

It looks like the spam users don't get deleted either as can be seen from the memberlist. They are easy to spot with their URL and all, goes way back to the beginning.

I have no doubt that the signup process could be made a bit more bot-unfriendly.

@clinton.hall: Was it some form of IP-blocking on the CouchPotato forums? I sure hope Asustor doesn't got that route, because blocking legit users in that manner is a good way to drive them away. I'm guessing most people would not "complain" that they were blocked, just never come back.

Here's to hoping we get a fix soon!

Cheers,
Mathias

yes, to be honest CouchPota.to does block posts (not signup) from known "spam" ip addresses.
This uses a couple of services to match these addresses. My work ip is very often blocked (corporate VPN routes ALL internet traffic through 1 external ip... so someone on my works network is being an arse!)....

So this is a tough call... personally, as pretty much the only one deleting the crap on couchpota.to, I welcomed the filter... but I do see how this can be very annoying for some users.

Mm, that's what I'd call being between a rock and a hard place.

I think a good place for asustor to start would be to change the Q&A question and not include the answer in the text. For example, something like:
What is the name of the ASUSTOR operating system (three letters)

But then again, I haven't managed any forums in recent years when spambots have become a real hazard.

I still manage a forum for a gaming community and the forum software / addons have enough possibilities to keep spammers from registering. A better Capacha does sometimes help too, without overdoing it or making it to hard.

Why i have the idea that Asustor is dropping this forum ?
FB get regular updated, why not the forum ? Most forums do have some FB integration with the possibility to crosspost news articles from forum to FB with a single click.

Even getting some more moderators isn't rocketscience to figure out if you still admin it.

The problem with capchas are that most (especially phpBB plugins) are already beaten, which means most bots will be able to circumvent them. Best way to beat untargeted bot (i.e. not someone specifically targeting your site) attacks is to do something unique, like in this blog post for example.

Agree with you here.. they should let the community help on this one!
