AS1102T - ATA bus error

Post by vozda »

Hi, community help and advice is needed since Asustor support is little missing these days

I was a happy user of my newly purchased AS1102T network storage. It is installed in RAID1 with two Western Digital WD40EFPX-68C6CN0 HDDs. They were specially chosen from Asustor’s compatibility list. The trouble-free work continued exactly little more then a month after purchase.
After updating the firmware from 4.2.6.RPI1 to 4.2.7.RR41 the NAS started beeping and red blinking. In the “System log” errors started to appear - “There is a data transfer error on sector xxxxxxx of the slot 2 disk!”.
Volume or RAID error was shown.
Image
The status of “Drive2” was changed from “Good” to “Data Transmission Error”.
Image
“UDMA-CRC-Error-Count” values in S.M.A.R.T. log of HDD in Drive2 started to increase.
Image
The next step was to change the places of both HDDs – HDD from drive1 was put to drive2 and vice versa. Unfortunately, the errors continue to be generated. “UDMA-CRC-Error-Count” values in S.M.A.R.T. log of replaced HDD in Drive2 started to increase.

The next desperate step was to put a different HDDs in the NAS.
I found two old Seagate HDDs ST1000DM003-9YN162. The NAS is still working without errors after I put the old Seagate disks.

Either my new Western Digital WD40EFPX discs are both defective or AS1102T is bad or Asustor have screwed up the last 4.2.7.RR41 firmware.

It seems that Asustor support system is not working now and it is not possible to send ticket.

Here is the kernel log (only part of it) for RAID1 with WD40EFPX disks, showing ATA bus error:

Power off, remove the disks and check the slot connections for any damage, try cleaning it with contact cleaner.

Sorry for the delay,
Nazar78, I followed your advice but nothing changed and I sent the disks back to the company I bought them.
While I was waiting the disks to be replaced, the NAS worked with two Seagate HDDs in RAID1 for two weeks without any problems.

Now I have the new disks and guess... again ATA bus error and UltraDMA_CRC_Error_Count increase for drive2.

What the F**K is happening? Black magic or curse....why does the NAS works with Seagate discs and not with WD disks?
I am freaking out! Did I made a mistake byuing ASUSTOR?

WD drives working fine here in my Asustor, have done for years.

Have you checked the drives in another device to make sure they're not the issue?

The discs have just been replaced with new ones. And the issue continues.....

I am using WD RED's in another ASUSTOR NAS also for years without any issues.

I read that, yes. Stranger things have happened. Try them in a different device.

This is usually related to the controller and HDD incompatibility or bad connections i.e. damaged sata cables (not our case for NAS) or dirty/bent/damaged connectors (both hdd and/or mobo).

If the connection looks good, try disabling NCQ then monitor if the CRC error count continue to increase. Note this is not persistent which will revert to default 32 upon reboot. If this works, use a startup script or cron@reboot to make it permanent.

Code: Select all

# Check the default value, usually 32.
grep NCQ /var/log/messages

# Disable NCQ, you can change the asterisk to specific disks i.e. sd{a,d} or range sd[a-d], note only works for internal sata but not USB controllers.
echo 1|tee /sys/block/*/device/queue_depth>/dev/null 2>&1

# Check the changes.
tail /sys/block/*/device/queue_depth

+1, also can try swap the slots.

I started having the same issue on my Samsung 870 Evo SSD as Drive 1, for my AS3304T, since ADM 4.2.7

SSD is 100% healthy after full disk scan and write + read test.

Sorry for the delay. Here is the final response from ASUSTOR about my case ;)

"..... it is the NAS hardware problem.
Please contact the local dealer you purchase the unit to proceed with RMA process."

So, now I am waiting for the new device to arrive.
