How to retain my data when my AS5002T died

Hi,

Last week my trusty AS5002t died. Simply wouldn't reboot and wasn't visible to control center. So I bought a new AS5202T.

I thought I had read that it would be a simple matter of inserting my 2 drives from the AS5002T into the new unit. https://www.asustor.com/online/College_topic?topic=343

When I tried that today, control center is seeing the new NAS but reporting it as requiring initializing which tells me it will wipe all my data.

Is there something simple I am missing or have I lost all my data? I was running the old NAS in a RAID mode (can't remember which) so am hoping that both drives can't have failed at exactly the same time?

Yes that should be the case, just transfer your disks from the old to new. However it's unclear about your disks health. To verify this, if you do not have a system that could boot and mount linux, prepare a bootable live usb and boot your NAS off the usb. With the usb plugged, restart the NAS and keep pressing the keyboard del key until you see the the bios/uefi to boot the usb. You can also use Ubuntu latest installer image try the OS without installing. If your raid is ok, you should see them immediately after booting with the usb, mdadm will automatically assemble your array. If you can confirm the raid is ok, then it's time to open a ticket with Asustor support why the transferred disks failed to be recognized.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Sorry to ask a Newb question, how would I go about creating the bootable usb?

No problem.

1. Download the ubuntu desktop iso image https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop

2. Burn it to a spare 4gb usb, if you're using windows, simply use rufus https://rufus.ie/. Just load the ubuntu image into the app then click start. For other OSes refer to https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/try-ubuntu ... ng-started

Oh btw I forget to mention, you have a 2 bay so most likely you previously setup mirror raid 1. I don't think you would setup striped raid 0 because if one disk failed, data lost is inevitable and very unlikely to recover.

Not had any luck so far. I created a bootable drive but so far was not able to start the nas with the usb. If it is any help, the disk lights are showing amber (when I installed two new drives today they instantly showed green, even when they needed initialising)

I think you are correct in that the drive may have been set up as raid 1

Need more details what problem you encountered while trying to boot the NAS off the USB.

The USB created should be as GPT partition scheme and UEFI target system. Test if you're able to boot the USB from the UEFI PC/laptop (not the legacy BIOS system) you've created.

If the USB boots on your PC/laptop, then it should show up in the NAS boot option upon pressing the DEL key on the keyboard that's connected to the NAS at boot up. Tips: press and release the DEL key every one second from boot up throughout the logo sequence until you see the boot menu interface.

The corresponding LEDs will turn green when harddisks are detected so this is normal.

I think you should really Try an alternative to rufus call Win32DiskImager (https://win32diskimager.org/)
