Hello,
I bought a new hard drive because mine was full. I have a AS 302T with only one 4to drive and I want to replace it with a 10to one.
What is the best process for me to keep all my data?
If I put my new drive in the second bay, can I do a full copy?
Thanks!

Re: Upgrade single hard drive
Sounds like that you don't care about fault tolerance (RAID). You can simply put 10TB disk to slot-2 and create a new volume for it. You'll get 4TB and 10TB volumes. (No, it's not a replacement.)

Yeah, the important stuff is already backed up somewhere else.
Ok, but I can do a full copy after that? I wold like to remove the 4to drive after that.

Hi
Here is the way you may do it, based on the way I did it in 06/2016
- 1/ get an 4Tb external USB disk, backup everything. backup your configuration too.
- 2/ Install your 10Tb disk in 2nd slot.
- 3/ Remove volume1 ( has I did )
- 4/ reinstall volume1 on your new disk
- 5/ restore your configuration ( maybe it will work now ), or reconfigure manually, recreate your shared folders
- 6/ restore your data
- 7/ remove the old and now unused disk.

Re: Upgrade single hard drive
Wow that seems to be a complicated task for something that should be easy...
Thank you.
Thank you.

Re: Upgrade single hard drive
A simpler way to do it is:
1) Install the the new 10TB drive. (Should appear as Volume 2)
2) Move your shared folders under "access control" to Volume 2
3) Your old 4TB disc will now be mostly free and should just contain the Asustor OS and the App's.
The following may also work:
1) Back up the "System Settings" of the NAS from "Backup & Restopre" to a folder on your existing 4TB drive.
2) Shutdown the NAS, and swap the 4TB HDD for the new 10TB one.
3) Initialize the NAS with the new 10TB drive.
4) Install all the App's you had before and then restore the system settings you backed-up from step 1.
5) Insert your old 4TB drive into bay 2 and hopefully it will recognise it and you should be able to access all your shared folders on it.
6) Should step 5 work, then transfer your folders from the old 4TB drive to the new 10TB drive under "Access Control".
You could also always get two 10TB drives and:
1) Migrate to RAID 1 with a single 10TB drive.
2) One RAID 1 migration is complete, swap the old 4TB drive for the second 10TB drive and repair and rebuild the RAID 1 Array.
3) You should now have 10TB of space plus single disk redundancy.

Re: Upgrade single hard drive
Thanks for the detailed explanation.
I tried something different however:
1) Upgrade single drive to RAID 1 with the new disc.
2) Now I have a RAID 1 of 4to with the 4to (old) and the 10to (new) discs.
3) What happens if I delete volume 1 for 1 disc? Is this going to delete everything on both disc or just the one I chose? After that, my partition will be 10to or still 4to?
Thanks!

Now you have upgraded to RAID1, volume1 is installed on the two disks. If you delete volume1, you will delete everything.itdaboyz wrote:Thanks for the detailed explanation.

Re: Upgrade single hard drive
Ah... Haha nice one me...
Ok I'll go with the old solution : reinstall the new drive and copy all data from the old.
It's really odd from Asustor that we have no easy solution to upgrade a singe drive when we have 2 bays. It seems really simple on the paper, yet it's a pain to do.

Re: Upgrade single hard drive
You could have done the following:
1) Backup to a 4TB USB drive or create a MyArchive volume from Storage Manager if you have a spare suitably large SATA drive laying around.
2) Initialize the new 10TB drive and install your apps/restore settings.
3) Restore data to the 10TB drive from your 4TB USB backup / My Archive drive.
BTW, RAID 1 arrays will always be the size of the smallest disc in the array.
