There is a GIT app for asustor but there is no info on how to set it up.
Can someone please provide a step by step to show how to get it up and running

I don't understand why NAS needs a GIT app.
You just need push/pull your GIT repository to NAS as a normal local disk folder. That's it!
GIT is distributed, no central server is required.

That is what the git app is for. To give you the git binaries and allow git push/pull via command line.

It is further used by other apps to allow updating to the latest versions.

You are right in terms of not needing it for the usage you listed. And I thought the same thing. However, once you start doing app configuration and scripting while logged into the NAS, it is nice to use Git to checkpoint your changes. As soon as you start creating or tweaking your Docker setup/start/stop scripts on the NAS, you'll want to use Git.
