SSD Cache - EXT4 or BTRFS

Post by phamine »

Which file system should be used?

Going to us an SSD for file cache and Plex Meta data predominately

Very simplified summary:
Btrfs - snapshots, file integrity
EXT4 - slightly better performance, wider Linux compatibility

There are a tonne of more detailed comparisons of the two online, so I'd suggest looking them up.

I started with btrfs but switched to ext4 for two reasons:

1. Performance was better with ext4, particularly for streaming video, which frequently laggged and stalled when using btrfs.

2. The btrfs disks made a lot of noise when they were synchronized each day at midnight.
