Creating additional email users

I have the Admin user working ok with admin@mydomain but am having trouble getting any other accounts to work. I have created another user using ADM --> Local Users and set up the password. Under App Privileges, I see this user listed for the Mail App. I can log into ADM with this new user and password, but my email programs fail when it tries to authenticate, saying the username/password is incorrect. I've double checked that the username and password are correct and have tried multiple mail clients. Is there something that I'm missing?
