configure routing on vpn server

Post by aenigmainc »

I am interested in using the vpn server app to get access to my home network. but it only seems to give me access to the asustor box itself. is there any way to configure it to give me access to the home network.

i tried setting it up to give me an IP address thats valid on the home network but it won't do that either. for example. if my home network is 10.0.0.0/24, i can't use that network. i must use 10.0.1.0/24 or 10.0.2.0/24. and none of them will route on my home network, or through the asustor.

any help would be awesome.

I am using VPN server (in OpenVPN mode)
My home network is all on 10.1.1.X, when I connect to VPN I am assigned an address on 10.0.1.X... this works fine, I can connect to all devices in my home network.

OpenVPN will put you on another IP-range but it should not prevent you from accessing the other devices on your home network. Some options to consider:
  • On the NAS: VPN Server -> Settings -> OpenVPN: Redirect gateway
  • On the connecting machine: Route all traffic through the VPN
Keep in mind that even though you might be on 10.0.1.0, your devices should still be accessed through 10.0.0.0!

Another blocking scenario I could imagine is the following:
  • Your laptop is on a café WiFi with IP-range 10.0.0.0
  • You connect to your NAS at 10.0.1.0 without routing all traffic through VPN
  • You try to access the IP 10.0.0.100
  • Are you accessing a device on the café WiFi OR your home network?
Cheers,
Mathias
