About OpenVPN vs L2TP vs PPTP

Post by prokium »

Dear all,

My needs :
I would like to create a VPN "just" to allow remote client to access to some services (Nextcloud, DNS (Chrooted), ... ) that are installed on my nas.

I would like to not be obliged to install vpn client on the clients.
Currently, i am using the L2TP (Clients on mac) and it looks like it's a good solution in my case.
About OpenVpn, it looks like it needs specific vpn client.
I didn't have opinion about PPTP.

What is, for you the "best" vpn in my case, and the easiest to configure?

Thx

PPTP is and old insecure protocol. I think support for it was dropped in macos 10.12 Sierra.

L2TP is as you noted natively supported in the macos Network Preferences dialog. It is also an old protocol but supposedly more secure than PPTP.

OpenVPN is a modern protocol. You don't have native support for it in macos but the Tunnelblick free OpenVPN client is easy to use, so I don't think you should avoid using OpenVPN just because of that.
