ADM 2.5 update bricked Plex Media Server

Post by RichardM5422 »

I updated to ADM 2.5 last night, and now my plex media app won't open. It just says web page cannot be found.

Has anyone else experienced this?

@RichardM5422 What error messages do you see in the Plex Media Server log file located here?

/volume1/Plex/Library/Plex Media Server/Logs/Plex Media Server.log

You will need to use a program like WinSCP to access this file. It's hidden from the ADM, period. Asustor doesn't feel we need access to application logs, so the only way to get it is through an SSH client of some sort.

If you can post the relevant portions of the log file, perhaps I can figure out what is happening.

I agree. ADM 2.5 has broken PMS. Has been working perfectly to date with ADM 2.4. Now drop outs. Screen freezes. etc.

I'm having no issues running Plex on my 7004T with ADM V 2.5.1.RB62, or with the prior version of 2.5.x.

My system is basically a dedicated PMS device. All it does is run Plex, some conversion scripts and basic downloads. Nothing but Plex related in any way. It is rock stable and able to Direct Play to 95% of my clients because that's how I have it set up.

I suggested earlier in this thread about posting the relevant Plex Media Server log files. So far we haven't seen any posted, so I don't know what's not working right.

I go by MikeG6.5 on the Plex Forums. If you go to that forum and look at the posts I have there, you will realize I do a lot of the Asustor specific support on that forum. I also have some tips and work arounds posted there for ways to make Plex work better, and how to get a well oiled machine out of the Asustor product line.

I responded to Tsburt there. POST LOG FILES! (/volume1/Plex/Library/Plex Media Server/Logs/Plex Media Server.log) The problems the OP is having appear to be different than Tsburt's issues, but without seeing the log files it's hard to say for sure. Both could as easily be a problem with the wrong file container, (MKV, AVI, MOV, etc.) or codec (XVid, DivX, H265, etc.) causing the issues. Tsburt's issues from initial read is file container/codecs.

Plex Media Server works darned well, when the files are set up right, the server is set up right and everything is tweaked correctly. In order to get to that point you need to be able to VIEW THE LOG FILES!

Just want to close off my comment as I have resolved my issues on the 302T. I went through the recent updates I had applied. I rolled back Media-Pack app to 2.4.0.r2 and Download Centre app to 1.0.3.r797. I'm not sure which had the problem (probably Download Centre) but reverting to the previous versions has resolved the issues with Plex! It is now working perfectly again! Hope this provides some assistance.

I've also got this problem with the recent update to ADM.

Updating to the latest Plex worked for me. Googled that last error and it was something about race conditions in the start up routine. Either way I'm happy.
Any suggestions what to try?

Might install latest Plex from their site?

Yes, I thought I had a post here under my old and now defunct user ID but can't seem to find it right off...

Basically it requires checking a few things. Make sure you don't have Media-Pack installed for starters. No one seems to really know what this does other than Asustor. Something in it conflicts with Plex during the start up process. Not sure how to fix it other than don't load that app from App Central.

Next, edit your start-stop.sh with WinSCP or equivalent SSH client to include a sleep line in the following section:

Code: Select all

do_start() {
    sleep 5 #<--- Add this line
    check_asdir()
    ulimit -s $PLEX_MEDIA_SERVER_MAX_STACK_SIZE
    (cd $PLEX_MEDIA_SERVER_ROOT ; sleep 3 ; ./Plex\ Media\ Server &)
    return 0
If you get the same errors you are going to need to increment the sleep to as high as 30. This is a delay for starting. Basically it makes the NAS stop for the number of seconds you have following the sleep.

You MAY have to edit this EVERYTIME you update Plex. Since the rest of the script may have significant changes while they do the update process. Test it first, if Plex doesn't start without the sleep, add it in after updating. I have almost always had to edit it in.
