How to downgrade ADM following a FAILED upgrade (aka ADM 2.5.2)

Postby Cheval » Fri Dec 18, 2015 12:37 am

The following process is something that worked for a few of us that a having problems with the ADM 2.5.2 update. The problem being that after updating the ADM release when the NAS reboots it will hang at the booting storage phase. Since you can not get access to the NAS in order to revert back to an older ADM version the following steps seemed to get the NAS past the boot phase and allow you to downgrade the ADM release.

You will need to have a spare hard drive that you don't mind losing the data on since it will be formatted during these steps.

Be warned that this is a user submitted process that allowed me to successfully (and at least a few other users) get back to an earlier 2.5 ADM version with no loss of data. However, this is or at least not yet an official process.

If you use this process please post a message if it was successful or if it did not work.

Sounds like I'm not the only one getting into this problem. So here is what I did to get downgraded :).

You will need a spare drive that you can use. Luckily I had one sitting around.

First turn off the NAS and then remove ALL of the drives in the NAS and set them aside. I suggest numbering them in some fashion to remember where they go (not sure it matters but better safe than sorry).

Second, install a new (or empty) drive into the NAS. Your going to have to format this drive and will lose anything on the drive (SO DO NOT USE your current drives).

Third, reboot the NAS. It should not boot and apparently it will jump right over the booting of the storage since the drive is empty.

Fourth, I connected to the NAS from the web interface and went through the initialization process for a single drive. Simply adding a admin password, setting the time, and formatting the single drive.

Fifth, After formatting complete you should be able to get into the ADM interface from the web.

Sixth, Go to the Services app and the tab for ADM. You'll notice there is an option to manually update the ADM release. Since, Asustor does not make it easy to find past ADM releases from there website you will have to figure out the naming for your image file. I did this by looking at the release notes and using the same naming convention. Example, below:
ADM 2.5.2.RCG2 - http://download.asustor.com/download/ad ... 2.RCG2.img
ADM 2.5.1.RB62 - http://download.asustor.com/download/ad ... 1.RB62.img
ADM 2.5.0.RA73 - http://download.asustor.com/download/ad ... 0.RA73.img
Once you've download the image use the manual update to locate the downloaded image and go ahead and update the ADM version. You will get a notice that your are downgrading versions (but heck the current version doesn't work).

Seventh, Let the NAS reboot (with your single drive). Then shutdown the NAS.

Eight, Remove the single drive and replace it with all the drives from before in the order you numbered them.

Ninth, Reboot the NAS and you should be good to go.

Warning, I was already running a 2.5 version of ADM. If you are an early version than I'm not sure this will work.

Thanks Cheval, this is important stuff to remember. To any mods out there can we get this post pinned? This is so important that we don't want it getting lost!

Many thanks for this information however the links provided do not work? I have spent ages going round in circles trying to find the old versions with Asustor and failed. Is it possible to update the links or tell us where they are located?? Many thanks.

Hi,

Common error in "forum" ... is to cut & past link when they are truncated by the display on screen ... (stupid forum software bug ... AND FROM long long time ... but common to forum application (not from user like "cheval" previous message))
BUT "cheval" also provide the link to original post ... where you can discover ALSO the real link ...

ALL link when displayed with ... must be copied one by one as copy link (for ex. in Windows) and not simple copy

so real link are :
http://download.asustor.com/download/ad ... 2.RCG2.img
"http://download.asustor.com/download/adm/AS50XX_2.5.2.RCG2.img" ... just to see all and not restricted display
http://download.asustor.com/download/ad ... 1.RB62.img
"http://download.asustor.com/download/adm/AS50XX_2.5.1.RB62.img"
http://download.asustor.com/download/ad ... 0.RA73.img
"http://download.asustor.com/download/adm/AS50XX_2.5.0.RA73.img"

OK - I have bitten the bullet and gone through the downgrade to version 2.5.0 - many thanks to all for the very clear guidance. However my issue still remains that the Logiteck App will not run. I get an error saying I need to update it.

This seems to be a very hard thing to do for myself - I started but quickly abandoned it as I do not understand things like SSH and as the LMS has stopped and it says "is not compatible with the current version of ADM. Please update first." - I cant see any way to get to it and stop the LMS as it appears to be off???

Is it easier to keep trying to get the LMS onto the current ADM, or, should I ignore the warning posted on the Asustor webpage "Since the file structure in the ADM 2.5 has been modified, you will not be able to roll back to a previous version of ADM after upgrading." and try and go through the process of getting a version 2.4.x???

Thanks - a scared and nervous, and pigged off user.

*******EDIT********* I have managed to get the existing LMS working again - it need the ADM to be brought back to current and the version of X.org upgrading!!! So can now look at perhaps upgrading the LMS - BUT - I have no idea how to navigate to the files mentioned (usr/local etc etc as I cant find these? Do I go via file explorer in Win 10 or via file explorere in the ADM???? Thanks.

*******EDIT******* Sorted - sort of....... ADM now current, LMS upgraded to 7.7.6 but still no playlist or indication of what is playing....something somewhere is broken......as well as my nerves.
