[HOW TO] Make The Most of Your Ethernet Ports - Adaptive Load Balancing

Post by MadPup »

If your Asustor NAS has multiple Ethernet ports and you are not using them all then this post is for you. For a long time I satisfied myself with a single 1Gbs connection from my NAS to my network but once I discovered the following option I was able to double the maximum throughput from my NAS for the cost of a patch cable.

While Link Aggregation (LAG) is an option for increasing bandwidth from your NAS it requires a network switch (or client) that supports that feature, typically a managed switch. If, like me, you use a simple unmanaged network switch then LAG is not an option. However there is an alternative called Adaptive Load Balancing (ALB) that is likely supported by your NAS and is supported by simple switches. This involves connecting all Ethernet ports on your NAS to your switch and configuring the NAS network setting to enable ALB.
