Help needed migrating from Synology DS216play to AS6704T

Post by pletse »

Hi guys

I'm new to this, and since I can't wait till I get my hands on the new Asustor AS6704T I'm looking all over the internet on how to configure and migrate my stuff without data loss.

I start with DS216play: 2 x 8TB - SHR

In the new NAS I would start out bij putting in 2 new 8TB-disks and one 4TB-disk to create a RAID 5 (The reason I add that 4TB-disk is that is the only spare I have...). Along the RAID Calculator I'd be having 8TB of storage with those 3 disks, and then I'll do a copyjob of the data from the original NAS.

My question is what do I do best next:
Add one of the old 8TB-disks in the NAS and expand the volume OR should I first replace the 4TB-disk with an old 8TB-disk and then add the last old 8TB-disk in the new NAS ?

I want end up with a system that is RAID 6 with 4 x 8TB-disks.

Thanks for looking into this and helping me out. All thoughts are welcome!

You cannot do the latter with RAID 6 as its minimum requirement is 4 disks, or if you insist to replace, you'll need to do a migration procedure, RAID 5 (8+8+8[old]) then migrate to RAID 6 (8+8+8[old]+8[old]), space expansion can be done at either level. So the former would be a better option.
