How to encrpt a USB backup of NAS?

Post by MegaDamo »

Ok, I have some encrypted shared folders on my NAS and I want these to be incrementally backed up to an external USB HDD.

Now, I obvisously want to have the backup encrypted also. So far I have failed to find a suitable method. Tried the following:
  • Backup and Restore- very quick but no option to encrpt
Encrypt the USB HDD- doesn't seem to be possible in ADM
Create an encrypted share on the USB HDD- doesn't seem to be possible in ADM
Duplicati- Can encrypt but is bonkers slow- like 4MB per second transfer to USB HDD. Buggy as hell too.
I did search on this forum and haven't found a decent solution here either.

Any help would be most welcome. Thanks

Hi community,
I want to backup certain folders on my DS212+ on an external USB drive, that should be stored somewhere else.

So I was wondering, how to secure the backup USB drive so that another person will not be able to access my data.

Is there a way to make the Backup secured by a password?
Or has anyone made some experience with TrueCrypt or other encryption sofware?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I use TrueCrypt all the time. I setup it as a encrypted disk file. You can put this file to NAS or any other storage (for example USB disk). You just treat the file as a normal one. However you'll need to mount this file under a PC (rather than NAS) to access those encrypted data.

And how do you mount a TrueCrypt / VeraCrypt container within the Asustor NAS?

Nope, you should mount it under Windows or Ubuntu.

Hi,

I'm searching for a way to create an encrypted USB backup of my NAS without any other machine. So using an additional Windows or Ubuntu machine is not a solution in my case.

I've already tried the app "Duplicati", but it does not feel very stable and mature to me. I'd prefer a "one file backup" like Acronis, VeraCrypt, etc.

Any other ideas on that?

Best regards!

That is a different purpose. Regarding to your goal, you should try encrypted shared folder that provided by ADM.

I'm already using encrypted shared folders. But how can I create encrypted backups of those data?

And how can I create a shared folder on the external USB drive? When opening the "Access Control" app, I can only choose "Volume 1" as a destination for a shared folder, but not my external USB drive.
