Changing a disk in RAID 1

Post by qtype »

Hi,

I have a AS3104T model in which I have a RAID 1 that consists of 2x3TB disk.
As one of them is WD RED disk (bought with the NAS) and another is an old Samsung disk (previously used in a PC) I now got another WD RED disk and would like to swap it with the Samsung one to be sure that everything is ok.
But I can't find a description of how to do it and not to lose my data.

Could please anybody help?

It's quite simple. When NAS is working, remove Samsung disk, put the new disk (the disk size >= the existed disk size on NAS) into NAS. NAS should rebuild RAID-1 automatically.

Note: before this action, it's essential to make sure that "your WD RED disk" on NAS is in good state (no bad blocks). You can do disk scan under ADM web page -> Storage Manager -> Disk).

orion thanks for the answer.
My worry is that the disks are not hot swapable, i.e. I can't just remove a disk while it is working, I need to unscrew it from the housing.
Wouldn't it be better if power it down, replace the disk and then power it up? Will it rebuild the RAID 1 in that case?

OK, AS31xx is not a hot swappable model. You have no choices to turn NAS off first. After you turn NAS on, NAS should rebuild RAID-1 volume automatically if the new disk does not contain any NAS volume information. Imagine that "the new disk" is used by another NAS before for a different RAID-1 volume, should your NAS use "the old disk RAID-1" or "the new disk RAID-1" as the base? Anyway, you can ignore this case because it's a new disk. (Hopefully your new disk is truly new.)

It's brand new, from the store...
Do I need to format it before putting it in the NAS?
Or will it be done automatically?

Yes. You'll need to make sure the old WD red disk being good first.

Ok, I've initialized the bad sector scan and will see the results.
After that I will format the new WD disk and the insert it in the NAS.
